Eloquent Impression Exhibit

President Abraham Lincoln, February 9, 1864, taken by Anthony Berger, Mathew Brady Studio, National Archives photo no. 111-B-4246 (Brady Collection). (Above right)

In 1881, Charles Burt again selected from Berger’s photographs and engraved Lincoln’s portrait for the $500 Gold Certificate, Series 1882. This likeness, however, showed Lincoln’s body ¾ to the left with his head to the right. With the change in currency design in 1996, this same photograph of Lincoln was chosen to appear on the $5 Federal Reserve Note, Series 1999. William S. Fleishell, III, engraved the 1998 portrait. Based on the Series 1999 design, the portrait for the Series 2006 note has been modified by moving it up into the decorative lathe work at the top of the note and adding shoulders.

Counterclockwise from left to right:

  • Bank Note, $5 Federal Reserve Note, Series of 2003A
  • Proof, $500 Gold Certificate, Series of 1922
  • Reproduction, $5 Federal Reserve Note, Series of 2006 (151% of actual size)
