C. Danny Spriggs
Deputy Director, United States Secret Service

C. Danny Spriggs, a 26-year veteran with the United States Secret Service, was appointed to the position of Deputy Director on February 13, 2002. Mr. Spriggs' appointment continues the agency's legacy of selecting its Deputy Director from within the special agent ranks. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Spriggs was the Assistant Director for the Office of Protective Operations.

In assuming the key position of Deputy Director, Mr. Spriggs is responsible for providing support to the Director in both the planning and implementation of the Secret Service's protective and investigative missions. Mr. Spriggs began his Secret Service career in 1976 as a special agent assigned to the Albuquerque Field Office. Mr. Spriggs' superior investigative skills and expertise in protection allowed him to progress quickly to positions of greater responsibility.

In 1991, he was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Special Programs Division. In this supervisory assignment, Mr. Spriggs played a major role in launching the successful transition of the agency's Counter Assault Team into the Presidential Protective Division. His managerial tenure also includes serving as the Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge and Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Protective Division, as Deputy Special Agent in Charge of the Vice Presidential Protective Division, and as Special Agent in Charge of the Philadelphia Field Office. On March 28, 1999, Mr. Spriggs was selected to serve as head of the Office of Protective Operations. As the Assistant Director, he had the primary responsibility for supervising all protective matters relating to the President, Vice President, former Presidents, and visiting foreign heads of state to the United States.

One of the many highlights of Mr. Spriggs' career was his act of bravery and superior performance during the March 30, 1981, assassination attempt on the life of former President Ronald Reagan. Mr. Spriggs was subsequently honored with the Department of the Treasury's Special Act Award for exhibiting excellent judgment during the attempted assassination by John W. Hinckley, Jr.

Over the course of his Secret Service career, Mr. Spriggs has been the recipient of numerous awards and commendations for exemplary performance. A native of Washington, D.C., Mr. Spriggs received a bachelor's degree in education/university studies from the University of New Mexico in 1974. He is married to the former Gloria Naranjo of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They have two sons.
