"The Spirit of Discovery”

(First day of sale was March 26, 2004) The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) proudly presents “The Spirit of Discovery,” the first in a series of two Commemorative Intaglio Print Cards. This engraved masterpiece was released in conjunction with the BEP’s participation at the American Numismatic Association show in Portland, Oregon, March, 2004. “The

“The Spirit of Discovery” Intaglio Print Card features an engraving of the $10 United States Note, Series 1901, the 1954 3 cent Lewis and Clark Expedition Commemorative Stamp, and the Oregon state shield.

The $10 United States Note, Series 1901, commonly known as the “buffalo bill” may have been issued to stimulate interest in the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition held in Portland, Oregon, in 1905. The face of the note, (Miscellaneous Die #5430), was engraved in 1901. The portraits of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were engraved by Bureau of Engraving and Printing (Bureau) picture engraver G. F. C. Smillie. Bureau letter engraver George U. Rose, Jr. engraved the lettering and numerals and Bureau picture engraver Robert Ponickau engraved the ornament. The bison (Miscellaneous Die # 5390) was based on a wash drawing by Charles R. Knight and was engraved by Bureau picture engraver Marcus W. Baldwin.

The 1954 3 cent Lewis and Clark Expedition Commemorative Stamp, depicts Lewis, Clark, and Sacagawea landing on a bank of the Missouri River during their exploration of the Louisiana Territory. The stamp (Die #1299) was produced by the Bureau for the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the expedition. Bureau artist Charles R. Chickering was the designer, Bureau picture engraver Charles A. Brooks engraved the vignette, and Bureau letter engraver John S. Edmondson completed the frame, lettering, and numerals.

State shields (or coat of arms) were produced for the states in which national banks were chartered and were incorporated into the designs of the backs of National Bank Notes of the first and second charter periods.
